Free Web Tools

There are a lot of fantastic web resources you can use to get your teens geeking out about tech at the library (and many are free!)

Add your favorite cost-effective or free digital resource on to the comments to help other librarians show their teens something great.

Music

8tracks.com- Create your own radio station or playlist, or listen to streaming stations from users around the world.

last.fm- Free streaming radio where you can personalize your stations and recieve suggestions for new musicians and songs to listen to.

Pandora- Online streaming radio based on a song, genre, artist, etc. Also available in mobile apps for teens who use their smartphones more than a computer.

Playlist.com- Listen to songs, build a playlist, share your music with friends or the whole world.

Google Music- Still in beta, but a fantastic resource. Uploads copies of all of your music to the cloud and lets you play them from anywhere. Forgot your iPod for the big teen tech meet? No problem if you're on Google Music!

Handy for School

BibMe- Works cited and bibliography pages created for you with full citations and correct formatting. Don't worry about where the comma goes ever again!

DropBox- Online file storage. Has handy apps for smartphones and tablets that mean no more hoping you remembered to email yourself the final draft of the paper that's due in about ten minutes.

Picnik- This photo editing site is free and easy to use. Graphics and photos are easily edited and enhanced on Picnik.

Zamzar- File conversion system. Turns any file into any other kind of file. A life-saver for getting around those "My file won't open on this computer!" freakouts.

Resources/Reviews

CNET- A good source for product news and reviews, along with podcasts and other tech resources.

Digital Learning Day - Start Teen Tech Week early by participating in Digital Learning Day on Feb. 1 (YALSA's a core partner!)

Digital Literacy Portal - Under Find Educator Tools you can access existing or share your own resources such as toolkits, lesson plans and more

G4- The television network focuses on video game news with lots of game trailers, reviews and interactive content.

Geek the Library - A library advocacy site from OCLC

Gizmodo- Tech reviews, app recommendations, and a good place to check out new and emerging tech and cloud-services.

Hackasaurus - Here’s great new way to introduce some next generation tech programming into your library, with a minimal demand on staff

Mindshift - Use this blog to stay up to date on all things relating to youth, learning and technology

National STEM Video Game Challenge - You and your teens can both enter this contest

OnGuard Online - Free information and resources about Internet safety, privacy best practices and more

Pew Research Center - Up-to-date stats on teens and technology use

Technorati- Has a great blog-search feature, and reviews on tech products. Good to use to find other stuff.

StumbleUpon- Put in what you're interested in and find related cool websites and posts on the internet. A great resource for finding original and interesting content before it goes viral.

Any other teen public librarians planning to use any of these resources for a program or event for TTW?  I've looked at the suggestions listed in the toolkit.  Some of them are interesting but not necessarily do-able.  Suggestions are welcome!

This year I will host my 2nd Annual Teen Tech Week Computer Lab, which is a chance for Teens to come in and tell me what they want to learn. Last year I had a bunch who wanted to do their own websites, so we had them go to jimdo.com and create.

No Teen Tech Week at My Library

Confession: I have a graveyard of programs that did not work at my library. Unfortunately, any great number of [...]
