Competencies for Professionals in Learning Labs and Makerspaces

Learning Labs and Makerspaces in libraries and museums are transformative learning spaces, in which users explore both traditional and digital media, interact with mentors and peers, and engage in expressive and creative projects. These spaces provide access to a range of media and technologies for community members, who might not otherwise be able to afford these technologies or have access to the mentors’ expertise (Honey & Kanter, 2013; Maker Media, 2013; New York Hall of Science, 2013). Programs in the learning spaces facilitate students-centered, socially connected, interest-driven, and inquiry-based learning opportunities, referred to as Connected Learning experiences (Digital Media and Learning Research Hub, 2013).
